Local Food Hub is working to ensure that family farms (the backbone of our regional food system) survive this crisis, and that the vulnerable have access not just to food, but to fresh, nutrient-dense food. Learn more and support our efforts here.
Farmers are among those who stand to suffer the most from this crisis. At the same time, of the food that is getting to people in need, very little of it is fresh or local, despite known health benefits of fresh, nutrient-dense products. Thankfully, Local Food Hub partner farms and producers, and the larger community are reacting with innovation. Below are a variety of ways to access healthy, local food in this time.
Community Supported Agriculture:
When you sign up for a CSA, you are essentially paying in advance for several weeks of produce from an independent farm. Many of our partner farms still have shares available, and are working hard to adapt the programs to align with public health and social distancing guidelines.
Farms with CSA’s (and their pick up locations) include:
Phantom Hill Farm (Albemarle Co)
Bellair Farm CSA (Sites throughout Charlottesville)
Radical Roots Farm (Charlottesville)
Malcolms Market Garden (Staunton, Waynesboro, Fisherville, Crozet, Charlottesville)
Whisper Hill Farm (Nellysford, Crozet, Richmond, Charlottesville)
Home Delivery/Pick Up:
Planet Earth Diversified is setting up a home delivery system in Charlottesville for their products, ranging from homemade ginger ale to fresh-picked produce. Use coupon code covid19 for $15 off your first order.
4P Foods is preparing to role out their home-delivery system of customizable, ethically-sourced food shares in Charlottesville within the next week. Stay tuned! The system will be operating via their sister brand, Shenandoah Produce.
Double H Farm is taking orders for greens, eggs, and meats (Pick-up or delivery).
Schuyler Greens has an online store for all your leafy green needs.
