Will Gray launched Back Pocket Provisions in 2015 to solve a problem shared by home bartenders and professionals alike: bottled Bloody Mary mix just doesn’t taste good.

We’ve all had it before – full of corn syrup, preservatives, and whatever “tomato concentrate” is – and we’re all sick of it. We want a Bloody Mary that tastes like summer, with just the right combination of spicy, sweet, and savory. We want flavors that are complex enough for the pickiest bartender, blended into a mix that’s simple enough for anyone to use (even with a hangover).

Today, Back Pocket offers three flavors of mix to restaurants and retailers throughout Charlottesville, Richmond, and Metro DC. All three begin with juice made from ripe, locally-grown tomatoes, and are blended in small batches into these recipes:

Bloody Brilliant: Back Pocket’s rendition of the classic, with horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, and cayenne pepper for a little extra heat.

Bloody Baja: Certified Organic sweet corn mixed with jalapeno peppers, garlic, and smoked spices for a Southwest-style mix that’s also vegan-friendly.

Bloody Bangkok: While supplies last! Back Pocket’s 2017 seasonal release is a Southeast Asian blend of red curry, lemongrass, and fish sauce. Keep your eyes peeled for a new offering late this summer.

Back Pocket is about more than delicious mix; it’s about helping farmers grow successful, sustainable businesses. It’s about turning ugly produce into beautiful cocktails. It’s about making fresh, ripe tomato flavor a part of our Bloody Mary year-round, even if it means spending all summer canning local tomatoes (and it does).

In 2017, the company sourced over 10,000 pounds of locally-grown tomatoes from small and midscale farmers in Virginia and Southern Maryland. Farms include: Double H Farm (Shipman VA), Whisper Hill Farm (Scottsville VA), Critzer Family Farm (Afton VA), and Owl’s Nest Farm (Upper Marlboro, MD).
